Mark's Custom Kits was again, honored to be part of a restoration project of one of the original cars from the series that had been owned by car customizer George Barris. The car itself was reportedly used in various episodes, and then eventually was placed into service in the show-car circuits. The car has also made numerous appearances over the years at various museums that contracted out with George to showcase his creations. But the passage of time and lack of proper care were not good to this piece of Hollywood history and once again, restorative arts had to be employed to bring this well known and loved car from the screen, back to its pristine condition. Follow us thru its path from derelict state, to one of beauty......
When last we saw this car out in public, was back in April of 2003. This car was part of a museum liquidation that was being auctioned off by Kruse International at the Klassix Car Museum in Daytona Beach Florida. This car, along with many other Barris' creations, were up on the auction block and its condition was less-than-optimum. Fuzzy dice from the wheel, a piece of cardboard for a tv and dash electronics that just randomly flashed non-accurate LED's.
The winner of the auction was put in touch with me for evaluation and restoration, and 2 years later, it was finally delivered to me to start work. Car got a near total restoration with an all new engine, transmission, suspension rebuild prior to delivery for interior restoration. Here are some of the shots of the car when it was delivered. Note: its NOT a pretty sight!
This was the starting point for the interior restoration. Reference photos are always taken upon arrival to be able to have a visual reference for a complete photo record of what is looks like from arrival to departure. Nothing of the car was utilized in the final restoration as it was in no condition to be revitalized and the client wanted no part of the original quality.
Here is how the progression looked from initial teardown, to its final resting palace. Needless to say the new owner is ecstatic to have this car looking like it is and that it now reflects the true nature of just how this car captivates everyone. It will be well cared for and now rests its weary tires on its own revolving stage.
